Shoreditch marks 100 years since first Everest expedition

The Shoreditch-based Alpine Club is hosting an exhibition to celebrate 100 years since the first expedition to Everest.

The exhibition, Everest: By Those Who Were There, will use words of expedition members from 1921, 1922, and 1924, expeditions the club helped organise, to explore the mountain as a symbol of adventure as well as significant tragedy.

On display will be diary entries, hand-written notes, as well as artworks and photography produced on the expeditions, plus clothing and equipment first used on the mountain.

Founded in 1857, the Alpine Club is the world’s oldest mountaineering club and has been based at Charlotte Road in Shoreditch since 1991.

The exhibition opens on Monday 21st June, and runs until October at The Alpine Club, 55 Charlotte Rd, Shoreditch.
