WØLFFE: THE STORY BEHIND “FAVOURITE SONG”
WØLFFE: THE STORY BEHIND “FAVOURITE SONG”
“Favourite Song”, released on 23 October, puts reclaiming your voice at the centre of WØLFFE’s music. Co-written and co-produced with Dan McDougall, the track explores control, hurt and the determination to take back something that once belonged to you. Its connection to Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” gives the title extra meaning: a beloved song becomes tangled in a damaging relationship. Musically, sparse piano and suspended synths give way to drums, bass and distorted guitars, carrying the song from vulnerability towards defiance.
The British singer, songwriter and producer draws inspiration from artists including Björk, Fontaines D.C., Aphex Twin and Cocteau Twins. Her creative process often starts with words: overheard conversations, unusual phrases and late-night thoughts become poems before she builds melodies around them. For her Honeymoon Season era, she began writing on bass guitar rather than her usual piano, teaching herself production through months spent working in her bedroom and studio.
Her cinematic interests extend beyond the sound of her records. WØLFFE has written music for Terminal, starring Margot Robbie, and Escape Plan 3, starring Sylvester Stallone, with further work including House of Guinness. On stage, she has toured with CHVRCHES frontwoman Lauren Mayberry and developed her own solo electronic show, performed at London’s The Old Blue Last.
Away from recording, she’s an avid reader with a love of poetry, surrealist fiction and the creative lives of other artists. David Lynch, Kurt Vonnegut and Sharon Olds have all informed her visual imagination. She has also spoken about carrying poetry on the Tube, finding inspiration while people-watching, hunting through charity shops and swimming in the sea — small details behind an artist whose work brings everyday observations into a darker, dreamlike world.
