nondef | cds sounds: Ruby punky assortment

There’s a punky lean to tonight’s solo show, though I doubt any of the bands featured would claim the term; more that they were acting with a healthy disregard for the place they came from: Mystery Light’s 60’s garage and Alice Phoebe Lou’s easy South African sneer, Yoko Ono not being especially weird in a way that influenced actual punks, Buccaneer channelling Enya’s Orinoco Flow through 90’s dancehall, dodgy double-denim 70’s sleazy pop, like my mum used to play, Pointer Sisters being the icons that they are, so not really punk at all.

I starting choosing songs on the stairs outside the studio and winged it from there, making at least one mind-blowing discovery (“Comin’ Down” by Jackie Shane) which Spotify suggested for the playlist and I played after finishing the recording. A Detroit trans woman crushing the Toronto R&B scene in the 60’s, she’s as punk as they get. It’s not on the show, but listen anyway.

This one is short and sweet, less of the chat, more tunes. I’d love to know if anyone enjoys it, because I did. And if anyone is reading this and wants more tunes like this I’m thinking to share all the playlists because Spotify took most of the CD Sounds shows off the platform for copyright. Fair enough.
