Milton Avery at the Royal Academy

A collection of works by legendary American artist Milton Avery opens in the Royal Academy of Arts in July. Milton Avery: American Colourist will cover the full development of Avery’s career, the first ever solo exhibition of the artist in Europe.

Avery was a pioneer of the Abstract Expressionism movement, paving the way for those such as Mark Rothko to further push it into the limelight. The exhibition will display his most famed landscape and city-themed work, as well as a series of family and self portraits and abstract tonal planes, with some pieces having never been seen before.

Avery’s unique ability to balance colour and form in increasingly abstracted compositions, punctuated by striking colours, is on full display in this visually remarkable exhibition.
