From Seoul to the VMAs: K-pop Ran the Show

If there was ever any doubt that K-pop has gone from global phenomenon to full-blown awards-season power player, the 2026 MTV VMAs just answered it — loudly, glitterily and with a lot of Moon People.

Held in Los Angeles, this year’s VMAs looked increasingly like a K-pop family reunion. BTS, BLACKPINK, Lisa, KATSEYE, CORTIS and LE SSERAFIM all featured among the nominees, with BTS ultimately walking away with three trophies. “SWIM,” the lead single from ARIRANG, picked up both Song of the Year and Best K-pop, while BTS also took Best Group.

And then there was Lisa, who made history by becoming the first Asian solo artist to win Best Pop for “Dream.”

That matters because winning Best K-pop is one thing. Winning Song of the Year — a category that throws K-pop into the same ring as some of the biggest names in Western music — is another. It says the music isn’t simply being acknowledged as an interesting international genre anymore. It is competing in the main event.

And the VMAs are hardly alone. At the 2026 Grammys, “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters became the first K-pop song to win a Grammy, before going on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song. Meanwhile, BLACKPINK’s Rosé had already made Grammy history by becoming the first K-pop artist nominated in the Recording Academy’s general-field categories as a main performer.

So where does this go next?

The interesting question may no longer be whether K-pop can crack Western award shows. It already has.

Basically: K-pop isn’t knocking on the door anymore. It has the key.
