LUCY RACE — FROM LIMA TO UTRECHT

Peruvian-born singer-songwriter Lucy Race has built a story around movement, reinvention and a lifelong connection with music.

Born in Lima and now based in Utrecht, Lucy Race describes her sound as a mix of cinematic pop, alternative rock and Latin soul. Music arrived early: Lucy Race’s family remembers her humming herself to sleep as a baby, and an earlier artist biography recalls her creating melodies on her mother’s BlackBerry when she was around four.

By around 12, music had become a serious pursuit, and by 14 Lucy Race says she was already working with Latin Grammy-nominated musicians. Growing up in Lima, Lucy Race often felt like the creative one in more traditional surroundings, writing lyrics and recording ideas while others around her were out partying.

That determination led to one of Lucy Race’s most memorable early stories. After approaching a musician and asking to perform with him, the encounter reportedly led instead to an opportunity connected with national television. With tracks including GO BACK TIME, Like If I Was Famous and More than a feeling. The move to Lucy Race represented a reinvention rather than a fresh start. Lucy Race has said the word “Race” represents movement, ambition and determination.

Her move from Peru to the Netherlands became another major turning point. Lucy Race says life in Utrecht brought out a more nostalgic and melancholic side of her songwriting, contrasting with what she calls her “bubbly Latin energy.” Loneliness is also central to Lucy Race’s work. Rather than avoiding difficult emotions, she uses them as creative material, hoping listeners can recognise something of themselves in the songs.

Her own description of the music is especially distinctive: “cherry with a splash of lime.” Cherry represents romance, nostalgia and emotional depth, while lime brings edge, unpredictability and something sharper. Lucy Race’s influences range from Amy Winehouse and Florence Welch to Justin Timberlake and Maroon 5, reflecting the mix of authenticity, mysticism, groove and pop instinct she wants in her own sound.

Lucy Race has also spoken about working remotely with a Grammy-winning producer in Los Angeles on newer material, while her songwriting remains instinctive and often spontaneous. Running through everything is a belief in fate, but also in creating your own opportunities. Lucy Race’s story is not about waiting for something to happen; it is about continuing to move forward. From a little girl making melodies in Lima, to a new life in Utrecht and the emergence of Lucy Race, her journey is already one of ambition, emotion and reinvention.

At the heart of it all is a simple aim: to make music that feels so personal that listeners hear it and feel as though they have found the soundtrack to their own story.
